Diabetes is a disease that once a person is diagnosed with it, they have it for the rest of their lives. A person can restrict it so that it doesn't interfere with their daily lives, but unfortunately there is no cure. Surprisingly, it is not the strict diet, exercise, or blood testing that is the toughest thing when it comes to diabetes. It is the emotional aspect of it. The roller coaster of emotions can take their toll. A person can go from mad to sad to refusing to believe they even have the disease.


Anger is one of the most difficult emotions for a person to deal with in life in general. It is no different when it comes to diabetes. If a person doesn't learn how to control their anger, it will take over their lives. One way to learn how to deal with anger is to examine it. A person should pay attention the next time they get angry and even take notes. Try to realize what they were doing when they got angry. See if they were with someone when the anger took place. Try to remember the location where the anger took place. Ask yourself why you were feeling angry in the first place. The common source of anger is bruised feelings. A person can use the force behind their anger positively instead of negatively. Recognizing and grasping the cause of anger is like recognizing and grasping the cause of diabetes. Once your realize why you're experiencing it, you can develop the proper regimen to deal with it.


The next time a person gets angry they should figure out if what they're getting angry about a major thing or a minor thing. If it's not a major thing don't bother with it. Go to or rent a movie with a lot of sad moments in it and don't be afraid to cry while watching it.


Life can be very hard and very unfair at times. This rings true when dealing with diabetes. Sometimes what is behind the anger concerning diabetes is fear. Nobody wants to be told they have a condition or disease. People can wonder how will this affect my life. They become afraid. Then they become angry. Everybody gets angry. There is a lot in the world to be angry about, but everybody can't go around having angry outbursts. Learning how to deal with our anger can make life more pleasant for those around us and ourselves.

Avandia Side Effects - Diabetes, PPH and Hypoglycemia

First approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 1999 to treat type II, or adult onset diabetes, Avandia became one of the most popular drugs for the pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline. It works by allowing the body to use insulin it produces to control the levels of blood sugar in the liver and prevent the serious and potentially fatal aspects of this condition that affects almost 16 million adults in the United States.


Unfortunately, Avandia has been linked to a number of serious side effects of its own. From as early as 2003, medical experts at the Mayo Clinic discovered that Avandia was linked to six cases of congestive heart failure in elderly men undergoing treatment for type II diabetes. These men experienced symptoms of weight gain, swelling of the extremities, shortness of breath, and fluid in the lungs, which all occur when the heart can no longer pump blood through the circulatory system which can cause fluid build up in the body.


Liver problems are also associated with Avandis. It can possibly result in jaundice (or the yellowing of eyes and skin due to the build up of bilirubin in the body), fatigue, vomiting, stomach pain, and nausea.


Avandis is also suspected of causing a condition called Primary Pulmonary Hypertension, or PPH. PPH is caused when blood vessels narrow which then increase blood pressure. High blood pressure can result in a number of serious complications such as shortness of breath, fainting, dizziness, and even heart failure.


Additionally, Avandis is linked to hypoglycemia, or the lack of sugar in the blood. Without blood sugar the body cannot function, and can cause a number of extremely dangerous side effects to occur such as accelerated heart rate, headache, sweating, fatigue, weakness, and dizziness.


GlaxoSmithKline, along with the FDA, sent a letter to healthcare professionals in December 2005 to alert them about the possibility of peripheral edema (swelling of the extremities) and macular edema (the buildup of fluid and protein in the eye that can severely impair vision.)

What Causes Diabetes and Why This Global Problem Worsens

The American Diabetes Association (ADA) says it does not know what causes diabetes. Okay, so there are tens and hundreds of articles that make it clear that certain key factors such as lack of proper sleep, lack of proper diet, uncontrolled body weight, and lack of regular physical exercise are more significant factors than even heredity that cause the development of adult onset of diabetes.

What if the same effort that is used to get people to educate their children was used to encourage people to care for their bodies? What if there were not so much competition and rip-off by the drug companies in selling their drugs? What if we weren't "programmed" to think that a pill is the answer to everything even a bad thought? What if we had not gotten accustomed to always have to expect instant correction to a problem that we have taken years to develop?

Not too long ago, I spoke to a nurse about this situation and she said: "Don't you believe that we [medical professionals] know that natural intervention, i.e. dietary and lifestyle change could give many patients better and more long-term results? We know that, but we also know that most patients are not able to stick with such a program." In dealing with type 2 diabetes, we must simply consider what causes diabetes - and we do know a lot. But what do to make sure we have better health, ESPECIALLY during challenging economic times? Type 2 diabetes is largely a condition resulting from a damaged lifestyle. We can fix that. Here are four key steps that I have used to remain prescription-drug free since 2006, and maintaining an A1c of 5.2. Anyone with type 2 diabetes can do this:

[1] Change to a high fiber, complex carbohydrate, low protein plant-based diet. I know this is contrary to many popular beliefs, but consider that carbohydrates are not the culprit in diabetes, high fat diet is. Most dietary considerations have been formulated to maintain good economic health; a high fiber, complex carb diet is patterned after the way nature provides our food and is better in the long run.

[2] Get regular physical exercise. It does not matter if you are physically challenged. You don't need to go to a gym of fitness center either. The key is to be consistent in whatever you do. When it comes to exercise, however, the more aggressive and consistent you are the better the results. For example, walk at a brisk pace [don't run!] for 30 - 60 minutes every day, 7 days a week for 8 to 12 weeks and see what that does to your high blood sugar. You will lose your medication! It happened to me.

[3] Rest. There are several studies that link development of symptoms of type 2 diabetes with improper sleeping habits. Today's lifestyle lend itself to late nights watching television and getting no more than a few hours. The research is showing that 7-8 hours of good sleep promote longevity.

[4] For extra boost, use a supplement that lowers blood sugar. There are hundreds of claims all over, but I can only speak for a couple that I am able to "swear" by. Eating Too Much Sugar Causes Diabetes - Is it Really True?

Does eating too much sugar cause diabetes? Everyone has heard it, and we all know that doctors and nutritionists tell people to watch their intake of sugar once they are diagnosed with diabetes, but is it fact or fiction that eating too much sugar causes diabetes?

Here is a Simple Plan to Stop Diabetes - Can You Do It?

So you have been given the diagnosis - type 2 diabetes. That is what you have. You have to face it, live with it and get on with your life. It is time to make some decisions about your future. Do you want to control the diabetes or let it control you


I bet you have heard it all before. The way to control diabetes is through diet and exercise. Change your lifestyle. Years of doing things one way must be replaced with doing it a different way. Instead of eating all those carbohydrates you love, you have to learn to love other kinds of foods. Instead of laying back in that recliner you have to get up and start doing that exercise program you are always planning to start.

Stop eating carbohydrates in massive amounts. There are 2 kinds of Carbohydrates: simple and complex. Simple ones are the sugary kind, easy to digest and that load your body up with sugar. Complex ones are the kind you want to eat. You want to spread them out over the entire day. It takes the body longer to digest complex ones and all the sugar does not enter your body at once. Once you start doing this you will see start seeing lower blood sugar levels, weight loss, improvement in insulin resistance, and lower blood pressure. All of these factors contribute to high blood sugar levels. Just a simple change in the way you eat and the kind of carbohydrates you eat can greatly improve all of these.


Then, start your exercise plan. Exercise, done on a regular basis, reduces the amount of body fat, increases your metabolic rate, reduces blood pressure and bad cholesterol (LDL), increases good cholesterol (HDL), and reduces blood sugar levels. All the things you need to change begin changing with a regular exercise plan!


Now you are taking the right steps to change your lifestyle! Just keep up the good work and you can live a long healthy great quality of life. It is up to you. You are now on the right road. Do Diuretics Cause Diabetes?

Diuretics are often prescribed for eliminating excess fluid as a means to lower blood pressure - they are also used to reduce the swelling in hands and feet (edema).


There are two things wrong with that.


1. Dehydration is very dangerous, and chemical diuretics flush out more fluid than you can afford to lose.


2. Diuretics flush out more than water - they flush out no less than 16 essential vitamins and minerals.

My own research indicates that the damage from diuretics can be even more far-reaching. They can, among other things, RAISE your blood pressure to dangerous levels. In addition, they can bring about the edema that they are designed to reduce.


Many doctors tell their patients to reduce the amount of water and other fluids that they take in. This is a mistake that can be deadly. First, dehydration leads to a whole host of other ailments that you don't need. (But hey, you can get a pill for them!) Second, it turns out that water is the best diuretic of all - because part of the reason why your body wants to retain water is dehydration. Some would also tell you to eliminate salt - another mistake.


Dr. David Tanton, in "A Drug-Free Approach to Healthcare," advises that the best way to reduce edema and control blood sugar levels is to help your body flush out the toxins. In his book he explains why he recommends drinking ten 8-ounce glasses of water daily, along with 1 teaspoon of Celtic sea salt.

If the meter is accurate, it'll get you through the initial period of adjusting your life to the regular testing of your blood sugar. Then take time to do some research into what's hot and what's not in glucose meters. A person in Britain is diagnosed with diabetes every THREE minutes

The number of people diagnosed with diabetes has soared by 50 per cent in just a year.
An analysis of official figures shows at least 150,000 new cases last year - up from 100,000 in 2007.

It represents one new sufferer every three minutes.

The vast majority were middle-aged people with type two diabetes, which is linked to being overweight through poor diet and lack of exercise and brings an increased risk of heart attack, stroke, blindness and amputation.

The toll of Britain's obesity epidemic, based on reports from GPs, was revealed by the charity Diabetes UK.

It says the 2008 figure could have been as high as 180,000, including people who died during the year and were removed from doctors' lists.

A quarter of British adults are now obese - so fat that their health is in danger.

Scientists estimate that unless the trend is reversed, more than 50 per cent of women and 60 per cent of men will be obese by 2050.

This would have a devastating impact on the NHS, with soaring rates of heart disease and cancer as well as diabetes.

There are now around 2.5million diabetics in Britain, Some 90 per cent are type two, which generally develops later in life and leads to high blood sugar levels which can damage artery walls.

Diabetes UK says another half a million may have the disease without knowing it. Experts called the figures deeply worrying.

Dr David Haslam, clinical director of the National Obesity Forum, said: 'The cynics have been saying we are not seeing the rises in premature deaths that people like me have been warning about.

'But that is because the obesity epidemic only really started about 30 years ago, meaning people have not yet reached the age where they will die prematurely.

'What these figures clearly show is that these premature deaths will come. I hope they will bring it home to people that losing weight is not just about looking good.

'Obesity can lead to breast cancer, colon cancer, prostate cancer, liver disease, problems in pregnancy and erectile dysfunction - all very serious.'

Diabetes UK looked at lists prepared by GPs for the performance-related element of their pay.

They receive extra money for listing people with diabetes and prescribing them drugs. The charity said better diagnosis could have been a small factor in the rise.

Chief executive Douglas Smallwood said: 'Diabetes UK wants the Government to put diabetes at the top of the health agenda.

'People need to be supported to make changes to their lifestyle, such as eating healthily, losing weight and being physically active.

'We must also make sure that anyone diagnosed with the condition has the best possible care, information and support.'

Tory health spokesman Andrew Lansley said: 'Labour have been shamefully complacent.

'We need to invest in efforts to reduce weight and improve exercise and diet before the costs to our health service increase even further.'

The Health Department said the rise in diabetes was partly due to an ageing population.

Job Loss Causes Higher Risks of Heart Disease and Diabetes

Losing your job can make you feel lousy. Whether you're fired or laid-off, joining the ranks of the unemployed is not exactly a feel-good event. You don't need a study to tell you that.


But what impact does losing a job have on your health? Could a layoff send a perfectly healthy person into a downward spiral of sickness? It's possible, says Kate Strully, a sociologist at State University of New York in Albany. In her new study published in the journal Demography, Strully analyzed a variety of job loss situations - including being fired or laid off or losing a job after the entire company shut down - and found that job loss may indeed trigger serious physical and physiological illness.


Strully used a nationally representative and continually updated data set known as the U.S. Panel of Study of Income Dynamics (PSID), which surveys people around the country each year on their employment status and their self-reports of health, among other things. Strully used data from 1999, 2001 and 2003 to track people's job status and the impact on each person's health 18 months later. Since previous studies on employment and health suffered from a chicken-or-egg conundrum - researchers could never be sure whether the stresses and strains of unemployment led to poorer health, or whether people's poor health led to missed work days and lower productivity, which contributed to job loss - Strully focused on people who reported having lost their job due to factors out of their control, such as the entire company shutting its doors. She found that among people unemployed under these circumstances and who did not report any health problems prior to losing their job, 80% were diagnosed with a new health problem - ranging from hypertension and heart disease to diabetes - 18 months later. (Not surprisingly, those who started out with one or more of the conditions asked about on the survey were 54% more likely to lose their job within a year and half, for any reason, than those who did not report any health problems.) The most commonly reported conditions among this group were high blood pressure, arthritis and other cardiovascular-related problems. "Job loss leads to a lot of physiological changes," says Strully, who conducted her study as a Robert Wood Johnson Health and Society Scholar. "That's definitely what this suggests."


More intriguing was the long-term effect job loss appeared to have. Even if some of these people found new jobs soon after losing their first one, they were more likely to retain the legacy of poor health from having once been unemployed. "People who lost their job and were re-employed within a year and half also reported increased onset of new health problems," she says. "They shouldn't have had the most severe experiences of unemployment and income loss, and still we see them having new health issues."

Many factors contribute to the onset of diabetes, including genetic predisposition and diet. But exercise can help reduce the odds of getting and the severity of this disease.

The most famous symptoms of diabetes include frequent urination, constant thirst, lack of energy, blurred vision and so on. A person might not recognize these as symptoms of diabetes, but he or she will surely recognize them as symptoms of something not right with them.
The main signs of pre-diabetes (and certainly diabetes itself), however, apart from symptoms, are not noticeable without testing. If you have any of these signs then chances are good you have several of them. You could have some or all of these signs and not even know it until the symptoms hit, and that will be too late.


In brief, these are the main signs of pre-diabetes to watch out for:


* triglycerides (fats in your blood), 150 mg/dl or higher


You can't detect whether you have elevated levels of triglycerides by how you feel, but you can feel their effect if left undiagnosed and untreated. High triglycerides are a sign not only of pre-diabetes, but of cardiac and vascular disease.


* low HDL ("good") cholesterol, under 40 mg/dl for men and under 50 mg/dl for women

* fasting blood sugar of 110 mg/dl or higher


The main sign of diabetes is high blood sugar. In a normal person without diabetes, blood sugars will go up after eating, and especially after eating carbohydrate-rich foods. But at their highest they will usually not go much above 140 mg/dl, and in a short time quickly drop back into the 80-100 mg/dl range. A normal person's fasting blood sugar (before breakfast) will not be 110 mg/dl or higher. If you get such a result it is very likely that you are diabetic.


There is one more sign, which could very well be considered a symptom. It is the most obvious sign, one you see every day in the mirror if it applies to you. And that is, obesity. Obesity in medical terms doesn't necessarily mean you are grossly overweight. There is a chart available in many places on the Internet, called the BMI, or Body Mass Index. Just "Google" it. You can use the chart to determine whether you are obese or just overweight or in the healthy weight range.


Of course, not everyone who is overweight or obese has diabetes or pre-diabetes. But obesity is the base from which most of the other signs of diabetes operate. If you have a BMI of 30 or higher and you have two or more of the other signs described in this article, you are at very high risk for diabetes and other serious health problems.


That can be quite disconcerting, but there is a bit of a silver lining around this dark cloud. If you reduce your body-fat to healthy levels, the other signs are bound to be reduced as well. Weight loss and weight control are key to preventing diabetes and pre-diabetes.


So if you are obese (that is, if your BMI is higher than 30), it is vital that you know what your other levels are. Knowledge of your triglycerides, HDL, blood pressure and fasting blood sugar will tell whether you are at risk.
